Minister Damien English Resigns Over 2008 Planning Submission
Secretary of State for Employment, Business and Retail Damien English has resigned after discrepancies were revealed in his planning application in 2008.
The Ditch website reported Wednesday that Fine Gael TD failed to disclose that it owns a bungalow in Castlemartin, Co. Meath he inherited from his father when applying to Meath County Council for permission to build a new house.
Under the Rural Housing Policy, the council only granted permission to acquire one-off housing to local residents who did not already own a home, and who could prove they had a housing need.English and his wife, Laura Kinney, have successfully applied for permission to build a 2,800-square-foot bungalow on a 2.5-acre site in Cookstown, 6 miles from Castlemartin home.
"Last night I informed the Taoiseach of my decision to resign from the position of Minister of State in the Ministry of Enterprise, Trade and Employment," the former junior minister wrote in a tweet Thursday morning.
