Real Housewives star Jin Shah has been sentenced to more than six years in prison.Jen Shah, a Real Housewives of Salt Lake City star, was sentenced to six and a half years in prison on Friday. The TV actress pleaded guilty in July to charges of conspiracy to commit internet fraud for her involvement in a telemarketing scheme that targeted vulnerable people.
Shah has apologized for her role, saying she will "work for the rest of my life to make it right".
As part of the plea bargain, she agreed to forfeit $6.5m (£5.3m).It will also pay up to $9.5m (£7.8m) in compensation.
The 78-month sentence comes after Shah's lawyers requested a three-year prison sentence, while prosecutors recommended 10 years.
Prosecutors allege that Shah, 49, and her former assistant Stuart Smith - who also pleaded guilty - sold lists of vulnerable victims, including elderly people, to other members of the fraud scheme. Authorities have argued in court filings that Shah is "the most dangerous defendant in the case".
According to prosecutors, the scheme has defrauded thousands of people since 2012. Victims included a widow in her 70s who lost half her life savings and another person with a health condition who became homeless after losing money in a scheme to pay for misleading job opportunities, according to Victims' statements.Shah was arrested in March 2021 while filming The Real Housewives in Salt Lake City, which airs on Bravo.
Throughout the show, the reality star has been public about her luxurious lifestyle, including her expensive clothes, jewelry, and her team of many assistants dubbed the "Shah Squad."
She initially pleaded not guilty and maintained her innocence through most of the show's third season.
Shah's previous descriptions of her job and financial situation created confusion among fellow cast members and viewers.
"What I've done for the last 20 years is direct response marketing. I'm making millions," she said in one 2019 interview.
